Sonus Networks carries 40% of IP-based voice traffic

Sonus Networks Achieves Historic VoIP Milestone

By leveraging Sonus Networks’ breakthrough technology for voice networks, operators have carried over one trillion minutes in aggregate on their Sonus-based networks. Sonus-based networks are deployed in more than 50 countries enabling operators worldwide to set new standards for next-generation communications by delivering unparalleled quality of service, reliability, and unique service creation opportunities.

iLocus’ report entitled, VoIP Minutes and Subscribers: 3Q07 Update, says that approximately 40 percent of all long distance IP-based voice traffic is carried over Sonus Networks’ IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-ready networks. This is more than three times its nearest competitor. The report shows that Sonus-based networks carried 36 billion IP-voice minutes per month at the end of 2007.

Hassan Ahmed, president, chairman and CEO, Sonus Networks, said the trillion-minute mark is an important milestone for the company and its customers. This milestone demonstrates just how widely embraced IP as a transformative technology has become in the communications space. Ahmed explained that, while the volume of traffic in the core of the network continues to scale in such a dramatic fashion, the business imperative to adopt IP at the edge of the networks continues to grow as well. He suggested that Sonus is well poised to capitalize on its leadership position.

According to the iLocus report, there were 232 billion national long distance minutes, with Sonus-based networks comprising 42.2 percent. Also, international long distance minutes totaled 24.4 billion minutes, with Sonus capturing 21.6 percent. These numbers represent an increase over Q2 2007. Jahangir Raina, Director, iLocus noted that there are many factors in today’s telecommunications market that drive the evolution to a converged network infrastructure.

Raina said that operators trying to maximize the benefits of their IP network need a robust IP voice platform designed to withstand the current demands of voice communications and scale for future growth. He added that Sonus has demonstrated its ability to meet these requirements and is continuing to evolve its solution to manage increasing IP-services.
