Mobile VoIP 'set for breakthrough in 2008'?

Technology experts at the BBC have highlighted the potential of mobile VoIP telephony services and suggested that 2008 may be its breakthrough year. Having IP telephony on mobile phones was placed sixth in a list of 2007's innovative technologies that are looking to make it big this year. The BBC news website placed mobile VoIP alongside the likes of web TV, WiMAX wireless broadband and ultra mobile PCs in their top ten technologies list.

However, a note of caution was sounded amongst these optimistic views of mobile VoIP's future. Although Mike Roberts of analysts Informa Media and Telecoms agreed that being able to make VoIP calls on a mobile is "very disruptive" to traditional mobile network operators as it challenges their call revenue streams, he pointed out that the technology "is still at a very early stage".
