Mobile entertainment to hit $64 billion by 2012

The mobile entertainment market will be worth more than $64 billion by 2012, according to a new report by Juniper Research. The global market for mobile entertainment was worth $20 billion in 2007, but massive growth is expected, particularly in mobile music, games and TV.

Mobile music will continue to be the largest sector of mobile entertainment, going from $9 billion in 2007 to $17.5 billion in 2012. The sector will be driven by both downloaded and streaming content, with paid-for and rental downloads growing significantly.

Games will grow from a $5 billion market to $16 million in the next five years, with mass market casual gaming accounting for a large upswing in mobile games.

Mobile TV is also expected to grow rapidly, from a $1.4 billion market today to $11.9 billion in 2012.

Dr Windsor Holden, principal analyst with Juniper Research said: "With revenues from voice services declining and messaging revenues flat-lining, last year finally saw a number of more sophisticated entertainment services begin to fulfil their potential and redress the balance. With more widespread penetration of 3G handsets - or entertainment-focused 2.5G handsets like the iPhone - there is likely to be a much greater surge in both the adoption and overall usage in rich media services."
