Motorola wins WiMAX deal from Pakistan mobile operator

Motorola has won a deal to supply WiMAX customer premise equipment to mobile services provider Wateen Telecom in Pakistan. Motorola will provide 198,000 end-user CPE built on its 802.16e WiMAX and IMS applications.

Wateen said the CPE will provide consumers, small businesses, and enterprises access to wireless services, including basic telephony and internet access, and data services such as virtual private networks for banks and other organizations.

Ali Amer, vice president sales of Middle East, Africa, and Pakistan at Motorola, said: "Wateen Telecom's nationwide WiMAX network is set to bring in a new era of connectivity and access for Pakistan."

Ovum analyst Julien Grivolas commented: "In the same vein of the deal made last week between BSNL and SOMA Networks in India, this announcement reflects the potential appeal of WiMAX in high-growth countries where wired infrastructure is poor. The order for almost 200,000 CPEs reflects Wateen's confidence in the rapid adoption of its WiMAX services in the residential market even though it is its first year of operation. The mobile WiMAX service is currently available in 22 cities in Pakistan."
