Alcatel-Lucent wins 71 mln usd WiMax order from Malaysia's Packet One Networks

Communications solutions and services provider Alcatel-Lucent has been selected by Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (P1), a subsidiary of Green Packet Berhad and a WiMAX licence-holder, to deploy and mange a large-scale commercial WiMAX network in the 2.3GHz spectrum band, in an agreement valued at USD71m for Phase 1 of deployment.

Alcatel-Lucent said it will provide a complete, turn-key, end-to-end integrated WiMAX wireless broadband solution for P1, to include base stations, wireless access controllers and an operation and maintenance centre. It will also be responsible for designing, supplying, constructing, installing, testing, commissioning, integrating, optimising and maintaining P1's WiMAX network.

Deployment has commenced in Klang Valley, Penang and Johor and will expand throughout West Malaysia, with P1 intending to provide WiMAX coverage for 25% of Malaysia's population (6.5m people) by the end of 2008 and 40% (10m people) by the end of 2010. The company expects to provide WiMAX coverage to 60% of the population, to include urban, suburban and rural areas, within five years, with the service providing a base from which to support further ICT growth and development.

The new WiMAX 2.3GHz service is expected to enable significantly faster wireless communications and provide access to P1's customers to services such as VoIP, high-speed Internet and other data service.
