Orange offers music to broadband customers

France Telecom said its Orange unit is launching today a free service with Lagardere SCA division Lagardere Active to allow broadband subscribers to listen to music online. The service, called musiLine, will operate using a streaming system, which means the music cannot be downloaded, France Telecom said.

Rival internet operator Neuf Cegetel launched a free music download offer last summer using the catalogue of Vivendi SA-owned Universal, which was followed by Iliad-owned Free's decision to let subscribers listen to music via the Deezer website.

A France Telecom spokesman told Agence France-Presse at the time that Orange planned to outdo Neuf Cegetel by offering a bigger selection of music for unlimited downloads by the first half of this year.
