Spain launches case against mobile operators for price-fixing

Spanish anti-monopoly authorities have launched legal proceedings against mobile operators Movistar, Vodafone and Orange, sources in Madrid said Monday. The authorities want to look into charges that the three companies illegally fixed prices in Spain. If the companies are found guilty, they face fines worth millions of euros.

The case involves price increases introduced March 1 in response to new regulations the Spanish government had introduced to improve the consumers' position.

The mobile operators are accused of rounding up the unit charge for talk time. Several consumer organizations complained and voiced their suspicions that the three companies had colluded on the price rises to prevent a loss of revenue after the government's changes.

The three mobile operators emphatically deny the charge. The competition authorities could impose fines of up to 10 per cent of annual revenues, the sources said, but Spanish media said that this was unlikely. The anti-monopoly body, which falls under the Economy Ministry, has not yet imposed huge fines.
