KDDI, Willcom to get WiMAX licences, in Japan
The Japanese telecoms regulator has decided to grant licences for high speed WiMAX-based wireless broadband services to Carlyle-backed PHS operator Willcom and a consortium led by domestic mobile operator KDDI, the Nikkei business daily reported today. The two firms have been vying with NTT DoCoMo and Softbank Corp for the two WiMAX licences on offer. It is understood the losing bidders will now revise their business plans to allow them to piggyback services from the licensed firms. KDDI, which is partnering Intel and Kyocera, plans to introduce WiMAX in 2009, while Willcom hopes to launch its own high speed service – also in 2009 – using next generation PHS technology.
