Iran confirms Ahmedinejad visit to Turkey

Iran has confirmed Sunday President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad will visit Turkey early next year but a final date is still to be determined. Former Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer visited Iran in February 2004. Former Iranian President Muhammed Khatami planned a visit to Turkey in September 2004 but this was canceled after Iranian parliament canceled a series of contracts with Turkish companies.

The Iranians awarded the contract for the management of the Imam Khomeini Airport to the Turkish joint venture Tepe-Akfen-Ventures (TAV).
Turkish Turkcell which had a 70 percent stake in Irancell won the contract for the cellular phone tender. However, both contracts were stalled. First the 70 percent share of Turkcell in Irancell was reduced to 49 percent and then completely scrapped. The TAV contract was also shelved.

The two issues remain unresolved.

However, during this period Turkey developed strong energy relations with Iran and signed a series of agreements for massive projects that has angered the United States. Turkey has also mediated between Iran and the West over objections to Tehran's nuclear program. All these helped to ease the frictions between Ankara and Tehran over the Turkcell and TAV projects and opened the way for an Ahmedinejad visit to Ankara.
