Claro Brazil Launches 3G Services

Brazil's third placed mobile operator Claro, a unit of America Movil, has launched 3G services in the 850MHz band, local press reported the company as saying. The service will be offered initially in large cities including Sao Paulo, Rio, Brasilia and Porto Alegre. The network was installed by Ericsson and Huawei. The news comes just days after Telemig Celular Participacoes launched on Friday (Nov 9) a commercial 3G network in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais state, in the same band. The operators were the only two in Brazil with licenses for bands that could be used for 3G services. Telecoms regulator Anatel previously said that Telemig and Claro would have to bid for one of the 3G licenses it plans to auction in the 1.9-2.1GHz band range on December 18 if they wanted to offer 3G services. However, on October 31 Anatel said it would allow operators to launch 3G services over any frequency, including the 850MHz. Both operators were clearly keen to get a head start on new competition due to enter in January.
