Vonage survives to VoIP another day

Vonage Holdings has secured a financial lifeline it believes will see it through what had formerly been considered a gloomy near future.

The beleaguered US-based VoIP operator said Silver Point Finance and other backers had agreed to inject $220.3 million to help refinance its $253 million debt load. That deal was announced in July, but came with strings attached, including proof of matching private debt financing from other lenders to the tune of US$ 60 million.

“We are pleased to reach definitive agreement on this refinancing at a time of unprecedented volatility in the credit markets. This agreement provides clarity to our partners and suppliers regarding the company’s liquidity position in these challenging financial times,” CFO John Rego said in a statement.

Some analysts had seen its refinancing needs as the final nail in its coffin thanks to the tightening credit sector. But the IP telephony player has a habit of escaping certain death despite problems convincing US subscribers to pay for its services.

The company has faced a steady stream of quarterly losses thanks largely to significant marketing costs and stiff competition from eBay unit Skype and from low-cost telephony services launched by its conventional competitors in the US

Its shares now regularly trade below the $1 mark after plunging from their $17 debut two years ago.
