Experts identify VoIP advantages

A report by Tom Flanagan and Fred Zimmerman of Texas Instruments has recommended the use of VoIP to SMBs (small and medium sized businesses).

As well as the cost-saving advantages, they feel that SMBs using VoIP can give themselves the 'look and sound' of a large enterprise - many of which are taking up VoIP.

While enterprises are embracing VoIP on a large scale, there are challenges for SMBs who wish to take up the technology, not least because each SMB is unique and has its own particular peculiarities.

However, this should not put SMBs off VoIP.

'Through VoIP, SMBs have access to the same capabilities and functionality that previously were only available to enterprises that had purchased sophisticated voice and data communications equipment or services,' says the report.

'With VoIP, SMBs can easily deploy advanced applications like call routing, unified communications and interactive voice recognition that enhance the productivity of the concern while burnishing its image with customers.'

For UK SMBs that wish to join the VoIP revolution, there was good news as a result of the broadband pricing competition.

Tiscali have just announced Annex M, an ASDL-based service, which allows a doubling of VoIP connections for each company, as well as being faster and less expensive than BT - they claim.
