14 Turkish companies make Forbes Global 2000 list

Three new companies from Turkey -- Ereğli Demir-Çelik (Erdemir), Halk Bank and Ford Automotive -- made the Forbes Global 2000 list this year, raising the total number of Turkish companies on the list to 14.

The Forbes Global 2000 is a listing of public companies with the top composite scores based on their rankings for sales, profits, assets and market value. Companies from 60 countries made the list, compared to only 51 on the inaugural list in 2004.

İş Bankası, which placed 371st on the list, was the highest ranking Turkish company. Akbank followed in the 384th spot. Garanti Bank moved up the list, climbing to the 405th place in a jump of 387 spots. Halk Bank, a state-owned bank that the government plans to privatize, made the highest first entry to the list, coming in at 873rd with its performance last year. Another public bank, Vakıf, climbed 23 places to the 909th ranking.

Turkey's largest industrial conglomerate, Koç Group, managed to put three entries on the list with the holding itself, Tüpraş and Ford Otomotiv. Other corporate titans, the Sabancı and Doğan holdings, were represented with two companies each. Sabancı's main company, Sabancı Holding, and its bank, Akbank, made the list, while Doğan appeared with Doğan Holding and Petrol Ofisi.

Turkcell, Turkey's largest wireless telecommunications operator, was rated by the magazine as the best company in Turkey in terms of market value, with $22 billion.

In total, the Forbes Global 2000 companies account for $30 trillion in revenue, $2.4 trillion in profits, $119 trillion in assets and $39 trillion in market value. Around the world, 72 million people work for these companies.

The US dominates the list of global giants, but with 61 fewer entries than last year and 153 fewer than in 2004, as many US companies failed to keep pace with global competitors. In contrast, China, India and Brazil are rapidly adding companies to the list. India, for example, has 48 companies this year compared to 27 in 2004.

The list of global high performers includes international brand names such as McDonald's, Nestlé, Toyota Motor and Walt Disney, as well as rising stars such as Turkcell and Infosys Technologies, a technology service firm headquartered in India.
