T-Mobile announces large-scale seamless UMA service for enterprise customers

by Brian James Kirk

T-Mobile will team up with enterprise wireless LAN vendor Meru Networks to bring fixed-mobile convergence to business customers that will allow compatible T-Mobile devices to roam between cellular network towers and indoor UMA WiFi networks. The two companies have tested the convergence program to ensure seamless "handoffs" from cellular to WiFi networks.

The service will allow enterprise customers to save on mobile costs and have better network reception in large offices where cellular coverage may be sparse. Using T-Mobile's UMA service does not cost customers any of their plan minutes.

The enterprise service is similar to T-Mobile's HotSpot @Home service, which allows residential customers to use a wireless router as a single access point to connect to T-Mobile, thus reducing bills and increasing call quality. Meru Networks' UMA technology allows for "roaming" from one access point to another, making the service more useful for enterprise customers located in large facilities. Service availability and pricing has not been announced.
