Vodafone Accuses Turkcell of Obstructing Mobile Number Portability

Vodafone Turkey CEO Attila Vitai has accused market leader, Turkcell of curbing efforts to introduce mobile number portability into the country. Speaking at a press conference, he said that customers were having to waste money and resources on carrying a couple of phones to ensure they can be contacted.

Local Today's Zaman newspaper reported him as saying "We want to prevent this [waste],", adding that number portability was also important for competitiveness. Vitai emphasized that customers should be able to choose the best service provider without having to change their phone number, currently not a possibility in Turkey. Vitai asserted that Turkcell was doing everything within its power to slow and inhibit the implementation of number portability. "We completed our infrastructure [for number portability] and decided to purchase the necessary system for number portability with Avea and submit it to the Telecommunications Board," he said.

The company has just opened its new headquarters building in Maslak, Istanbul

Last September, Turkcell was the only bidder in the country's 3G license auction, after Vodafone and Avea boycotted the process until mobile number portability had been introduced.

Turkcell dominates the local market, controlling some 60% of customer base according to figures from the Mobile World analysts. Vodafone is second with 26% and Avea trails with just 14%. The country has nearly 54 million mobile phone users, which represents a market penetration level of 76%.
