Report: VoIP, Web Apps Dominate Evening Internet Use

By Michael Dinan

VoIP communications, vide-streaming, social networking and gaming are dominating Internet use during peak evening hours, according to a new study from a Canadian company that reports network traffic information to DSL, cable, fixed wireless and mobile operators.

Officials at Waterloo, Ontario-based Sandvine say that between 6 and 11 p.m. they’re seeing rises in the entertainment-based interactive applications of up to 50 percent per subscriber.

According to Dave Caputo, Sandvine’s co-founder, president and chief executive officer, the company’s research shows that families are spending more of their downtime using sites such as YouTube, Xbox Live and Skype.

“Not only does this signal a dramatic shift in consumer behavior but emphasizes the rapid evolution and real strain placed on the Internet,” Caputo said.

Peer-to-peer traffic is leading the way, with 61 percent of network traffic, even during high volume times.

The chart on the right shows upstream bandwidth share distribution:

Part of the reason is that so-called “bulk bandwidth” applications, like peer-to-pper, are on all the time, so they’re not affected by changes to network use.

“This reinforces the importance of protecting real-time applications that are sensitive to jitter and latency during times of peak usage,” Caputo said. “Effective network traffic optimization techniques use sophisticated policies that balance network capacity, application requirements and subscriber quality of experience in real-time.”

The study analyzed data between July 1 and Sept. 12, from more than 16 million anonymous broadband Internet subscribers, across 18 countries and five continents, and representing 26 cable modem and DSL service providers.

Web traffic and video-streaming make up about 59 percent of downstream bandwidth consumption, the study says. During peak hours, Web apps consume even more – 64 percent.

“This large share of bandwidth is composed of many different types of traffic, including Web browsing, social sites with large amounts of digital photos and buffered real-time video sites such as YouTube,” officials with Sandvine say.
