Huawei sees $22 billion sales contracts in 2008

Huawei, China's biggest telecom equipment maker expects sales contracts to rise 38 percent in 2008, as it looks to win business overseas, its U.S. head of marketing Charlie Chen said.

"This year we're targeting $22 billion in sales contracts," up from $16 billion in 2007, Chen said in an interview with Reuters at the CTIA, annual wireless showcase in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Huawei brought in about 72 percent of its sales from outside China in 2007, up from 65 percent the year before as the company worked on growing overseas in markets like Europe and the United States.

Privately-held Huawei competes with companies such as Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens, a venture of Nokia and Siemens in the wireless network equipment market.

It also competes with Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Motorola Inc in the market for mobile phones.

Huawei is not interested in buying the mobile phone business of Motorola because the companies have different approaches to the cellphone market, Ross Gan, Huawei's global head of corporate communications said.

Motorola said last week it would spin off its struggling mobile phone business into a separate publicly-traded business, leading to speculation that the move could lead to an eventual sale of the unit.

While North America is currently a small part of Huawei's global network equipment and handset business, Chen says he sees it as a good opportunity for growth.

The company, which has been operating in the U.S. market since 2001, said its U.S. telecom customers include privately-held Alltel, the largest U.S. rural mobile provider and regional service Leap Wireless.

But Chen is also working to win business among the top four national operators in the U.S.

"All the big operators are going to be our target customers. We're still working on it," he said. "There's no deal to announce."

The top U.S. mobile providers are AT&T Inc and Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, as well as Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA, owned by Deutsche Telekom.

Asked whether the company was concerned a U.S. economic slowdown would effect demand for equipment in the rest of the world, Chen said demand for communications services would keep growing, though there were uncertainties.

"I definitely think there are some uncertainties in front of everybody," including operators and suppliers he said but added, "We still foresee more demand for services."

10 Reasons VoIP Hasn’t Hit the Mainstream…Yet

VoIP technology has been steadily growing in use over the course of the last five years. As broadband Internet becomes increasingly ubiquitous, more users are finding that it’s easy to place voice calls through their computers. However, the growth of VoIP hasn’t peaked yet. The average person uses both mobile phones and computers on a daily basis but doesn’t yet make use of VoIP technology to streamline their communication.

Let’s take a look at the top ten reasons that VoIP hasn’t hit the mainstream yet so we can see what it will take to make VoIP a common technology:

1. VoIP is marketed to businesses. The average residential customer could easily make use of VoIP calls to reduce their calling costs and streamline their voice, data and image communication. However, VoIP currently isn’t being widely marketed to the residential population. Instead, most VoIP providers advertise specifically to business customers which means that the residential market across the world is currently missing out on VoIP. As more residential customers start becoming aware of what VoIP can do for them, VoIP use is likely to grow.

2. Problems in the industry. There are dozens of VoIP providers today but very few of them are considered to be stable in the industry. Last year, a major VoIP provider (SunRocket) shut down and customers were left out in the cold. Although most of those customers were transitioned to new VoIP providers, they experienced numerous problems with the transition including being billed for VoIP service they weren’t receiving. Another major problem has been that Skype, a global leader in computer calling, has seen several issues crop up recently including excessive SPIT (VoIP spam). These flaws in the industry make consumers hesitant to get involved with VoIP until the market becomes more stable.

3. Mobile broadband and smartphones are relatively new. One of the best features for VoIP users is that calls can be routed through the computer at a low cost but forwarded to multiple phone numbers. This means that your cell phone can take VoIP calls. However, mobile VoIP is a very new thing due in part to the fact that mobile phones are only just starting to have the capacity to carry both voice and data at the level desired by customers. As more and more people start using mobile broadband, we will see more and more people using mobile VoIP.

4. Confusing costs. One of the things about VoIP that deters customers is that it’s difficult to understand most VoIP pricing plans. With your mobile phone, you probably have a set monthly rate for a certain number of minutes and then a per-minute rate if you go over your minutes. If you’re lucky, you might have one of the new all-usage flat-rate monthly plans that some companies are beginning to offer. Those plans are easy to understand. In contrast, VoIP plans vary by the number of lines that you’re using, the location that you’re calling, the features that you have and other details. If VoIP companies can find a way to make their payment plans make more sense to the average user, more people might become interested in VoIP technology.

5. Security concerns. Many people are concerned about the security risks that they believe VoIP poses to their computers and phone lines. When 2008 predictions for security problems were made at the end of last year, VoIP hacking was high on the list. Thus far, those fears don’t seem to have been realized (although there’s been an increase in VoIP spam for some users). However, it’s enough of a fear to deter new customers from checking out what VoIP is all about. In order to make VoIP calling more mainstream, we’ll need to see strengthening of VoIP security features.

6. Installation issues. When VoIP first hit the market, it was primarily in the form of on-site VoIP. This required the user to purchase hardware that had to be installed in the home or business. This is no longer the case as hosted VoIP (also known as virtual PBX systems) have become the norm. However, potential customers who had looked into the original VoIP systems may not yet realize that things have gotten significantly easier. VoIP companies need to promote this aspect of the business while also offering superior technical assistance during download and use in order to attract the average consumer.

7. Bad reputation regarding call quality. It has only been in about the last year that VoIP companies really got a handle on the technology that they are using to connect calls through computers. Prior to that, individuals interested in using VoIP had to sacrifice some call quality for the benefits of the service. This led to a bad reputation for VoIP; people assume that all VoIP calls are going to sound bad. The reality is that VoIP calls will sound at least as clear as calls on your mobile phone and may be much clearer if you are using a landline to place the call. VoIP fans will have to spread the word that call quality has improved if they want others to join the VoIP bandwagon.

8. Lack of attention from other industries. One of the ways that technologies spread is through collaboration with other industries. For example, online social networking has been combined with mobile technologies and GPS location services to allow it to become of widespread interest to multiple facets of society. As a general rule, VoIP hasn’t received much collaborative attention from other technology sectors. However, this has been changing in recent years. Click-to-call widgets have brought together VoIP and social networking, mobile broadband has brought VoIP to cell phones and video conferencing technology has started bringing VoIP to remote businesses.

9. Lack of media coverage. There are many reasons that VoIP hasn’t become mainstream yet but one of the biggest ones is that people simply don’t really know what it’s all about. Media coverage of VoIP technology has been lacking compared to many newer voice technologies. VoIP is spreading primarily through word of mouth so as people start to tell each more about it, growth of VoIP should increase.

10. It’s new. In the end, the fact that VoIP hasn’t peaked yet is due to the fact that it’s still a relatively new technology. The way that it’s being used today – using hosted VoIP systems and collaboration with other industries – is particularly new. Some kinks still need to be worked out and VoIP businesses need to establish themselves in the market in order to truly attract the attention of the average user.

There are a lot of factors which are hindering VoIP from hitting the mainstream market full on. Despite this, the number of VoIP users continues to grow at a steady rate. This growth suggests that there is a strong interest in VoIP by users who are aware of what it’s all about. If the VoIP industry can resolve some of these outstanding issues and make VoIP easier to use for the mobile broadband customer then there’s a good chance that the VoIP market will see a surge.

Vodafone's USB Modem Stick is a mobile internet adaptor, and its support for HSDPA gives it the edge over previous 3G adaptors, with a claimed top download speed of 7.2Mbps.

It seems you can't read a national newspaper, turn on the TV or walk passed a billboard without being bombarded with adverts for mobile internet services.

Operators promise 'broadband on the move', offering 3G adaptors enabling us to browse the web, send emails and download large files at high speed.

Vodafone's USB Modem Stick is the latest such device and its support for High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) gives it the edge over previous 3G adaptors with a claimed top download speed of 7.2 megabits per second (Mbps).

This new model Vodafone USB Modem Stick is much smaller than Vodafone's Pebble 3G adaptor. It's about the same size as an early USB memory stick, but still wide enough to render the adjacent USB ports on some laptops unusable.

Fortunately Vodafone supplies a USB extender cable in the Vodafone USB Modem Stick's box.

But these are minor grievances - the Vodafone USB Modem Stick is a sleek device, with the small tray that houses the SIM card being the only design point of note. Plus, installation is a breeze – XP and Vista users will find that drivers install automatically, so they'll be connected in no time.

However, it's the download speeds that most people will be interested in.

Actual 3G speeds rarely match manufacturers' claims, and the Vodafone USB Modem Stick is no different.

In our central London office - which like much of capital is covered by Vodafone's HSDPA network - we generally achieved between 1.8Mbps and 2.2Mbps. In real terms, that allowed us to download a 56MB file in just five minutes.

On the outskirts of London and on the 40-minute train towards the South West, however, the Vodafone USB Modem Stick's internet access was flaky, frequently switching to GPRS and completely dropping out in some instances. Once we'd arrived at our destination, we were back on a standard 3G network.

Vodafone makes no promises about ubiquitous HSDPA coverage; the company outlines on its website (http://tinyurl.com/32jlz8) the areas in which people can expect to access its super-fast service.

Much of London is covered, as are the UK's largest airports and many major cities. But the fact remains, when you're in an area covered by Vodafone's fastest network, the Vodafone USB Modem Stick and Vodafone's HSDPA service provides incredible download speeds - faster than some home ADSL connections.

Various packages are available - with perhaps the best value being Vodafone's Mobile Broadband Business deal - the two-year contract gives you the Vodafone USB Modem Stick free of charge and unlimited downloads (there are fair usage restrictions) all for £25 per month.

Rumors are out again that Ebay’s albatross. aka Skype, may soon be unloaded to Google. The deal could be valued at as much as $6 billion:

“Skype is booking about $400 million in revenue now, and it’s conceivable the company could command 10-times that. *A reader suggests Skype is on track to post $600mm of revenue in 2008. If so, Google might well pay $5-$6 billion.,”writes Henry Bloget at Silicon Alley Insider.

Complaints with Skype isn’t anything new. Rumors have been rife for sometime that Ebay had to do something with the P2P VoIP system. The company went from “cool and disruptive to a wildly over-priced acquisition” when it purchased Skype, writes Mark Evans., and took a $1.4 billion writedown on the deal.

While eBay may have come to hate the P2P VoIP system, TechCrunch’s Michael Arlington points out that Google has just started to think about dominating the voice space. The company has GTalk, it’s own peer-to-peer VoIP system, a free 411 service, and GrandCentral.

Adding Skype to that mix could pull those services together. Certainly pulling together Skype and Gmail are intriguing. The move would give Gmail the broadest reach of any P2P VoIP system today. Skype has done more than a 100 billion VoIP minutes and at any one time there are 10 million simultaneous users on Skype. That’s some marketplace for Google’s products.

The integration of Gmail and Skype could also help with third-party presence integration. Google uses XMPP in Gmail for presence information so a Skype integration could finally open up the network to sharing presence information with other IM systems.

As for business, Skype for Business could end up being bundled in with Google Apps as a starter. What might be more interesting is a tighter integration between Asterisk, which Gmail works with today, and Skype. I’m thinking native Skype trunking (available through third-parties today), using the Skype client as a client on the Asterisk server, and federating presence between Asterisk servers.

The next-generation wireless technology, known as WiMax, is full of potential to drive cheaper, high-speed wireless data, voice and video communications, or a dismal failure, depending on who you talk to.

On the one hand, rumors have surfaced that several cable and technology giants are poised to make a multi-billion dollar investment in the nascent technology. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported on talks to resuscitate the failed joint venture between Sprint Nextel Corp. and Clearwire Corp., a venture formed to build out a WiMax wireless network in the U.S.

Those talks reportedly include efforts to raise at least $3 billion from cable operators Time- Warner Inc., Comcast Corp., and Bright House Networks, along with tech firms Intel Corp. and Google Inc.

And on the other hand, there is Garth Freeman, the chief executive of a little-known Australian Internet company called Buzz Broadband. A few weeks ago, Freeman spouted off at an industry conference in Thailand, where he lambasted the technology his firm had put into place, calling the episode a "miserable failure."

At face value, the viewpoints seem to be at the opposite ends of the spectrum. One dismisses WiMax, while a new venture, backed by big names and big bucks, could bode well for the adoption of the technology.

But both seem to confirm the increasingly skeptical view that WiMax, once touted as a lower-cost, wider-range wireless technology, is taking longer to deploy, is more expensive than previously estimated and it may not be the wireless panacea once predicted.

"Anyone who is going to spend the money better make sure they do due diligence to make sure it works," said Phillip Reedman, a Gartner analyst. "Like any construction project, it always costs more and takes longer than you originally anticipate."

In February, Andrew Parkin-White, principal analyst of Cambridge, U.K.-based Analysys wrote a critical report of the technology. He said 2008 will be a decisive year for WiMax after the serious setbacks suffered last year, when the plug was pulled on the venture between Sprint Nextel and Clearwire -- a company founded by cellular pioneer Craig McCaw.

As of Monday, no one was willing to confirm the reports that Comcast may be investing as much as $1 billion into a new joint venture operated by Sprint Nextel and Clearwire and that Intel is reportedly willing to put in as much as $ 1 billion or more.

Kari Aakre, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip giant declined to comment on rumors and speculation. But she added that Intel remains bullish on WiMax, saying the technology is definitely "ready for prime time." She declined to discuss the Buzz Broadband CEO's comments, since Intel was not involved in that installation. Intel plans to launch chips that will turn laptops and other mobile gadgets into WiMax-enabled devices.

"A WiMax network is not just WiMax equipment, there are a lot of things that have to go into it. You can do it well or you can do it poorly," said Chad Parelle, vice president of marketing at Airspan Networks, a WiMax equipment supplier. "In the case of Buzz Broadband, they did it poorly and they refused to accept our help, or even the help of a third party to fix the issues."

Buzz Broadband's problems appear to stem from an inadequate backhaul network, a high-capacity line used to transmit data from the wireless network to a wired one. The company may have underestimated the number of users, and its pipe was likely not big enough. Freeman did not respond to email and phone messages to discuss his firm's experience.

"This is what happens when you try to cut costs to the bone," said Ronald Gruia, principal telecom analyst at Frost & Sullivan. "You should always give yourself some wiggle room."

Perhaps Intel's success with another wireless technology is partly to blame for the great expectations surrounding WiMax. Some in the industry had anointed WiMax as the next generation of WiFi, the now-popular wireless technology mostly used by mobile warriors on laptops to access the Internet via public hotspots, or at work or home. Intel was a big proponent of WiFi and its chipsets that work with their microprocessors, or brain chips, let laptop users easily connect to WiFi networks. Intel's cheerleading and work setting standards, plus the ability to buy computers with built-in WiFi capability, helped fuel widespread adoption of WiFi by consumers and corporate America.

"With WiFi ... there is really not a lot of complexity to it," said Francis Sideco, a senior analyst at iSuppli.

But with WiMax, he noted, "the devices aren't there yet ... The devices ... have to be there, the infrastructure/actual network has to be there, and the applications have to be there as well. Until those three things start to gather momentum, it's going to be this slow trickle."

The cable companies want to use WiMax to be able to better compete with the telecommunications giants like AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc., which are gearing up to offer consumers more services that need more capable networks: home telephone service, high-speed Internet access, cell phone services and high-quality video.

Some analysts see WiMAX as competing with the emerging next generation data/ cell networks, such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and the High Speed Packet Access (HSPA).

"Even though there has been a lot of hype around WiMax, it's just another cellular technology," Qualcomm Inc. chief executive Paul Jacobs said last year at the big wireless show called CTIA, which is going on this week in Las Vegas.

Sprint had planned to invest $5 billion in building out the WiMax network by 2010, a hefty sum that activist investor Ralph Whitworth took issue with when he launched his fight with the company.

But just because big companies such as Comcast, Time-Warner, Intel, and others want to throw lots of money at a technology, doesn't mean it's going to succeed. One of the big reasons the U.S. lags behind Europe and Asia in cellular technologies is due to the fact that the U.S. is an alphabet soup of competing networks and technologies, and not enough standards. Perhaps WiMax will only split the market even further.
